Worksop: Outwood Academy may close for the day after unions plan strike action

The NUT voted in favour of a strike, planned for Wednesday 26th March, after several unions remained in dispute with the government about their planned changes to teachers’ pay and conditions.

Angela Hill, school principle, said that the action was not against Outwood Academy itself, but part of a national industrial action organised by these trade unions.

She added that neither the Trust Board for the academy, nor the chief executive, Mr Wilkins, were legally allowed to close Outwood ‘in sympathy’ with the strikes.

“We will only close if the opinion of Mr Wilkins is that it is not safe to remain open- however, it is unlikely that lessons will be normal and there may have to be sessions of private study supervised by a senior member of staff,” Mrs Hill said.

It was announced that parents would be notified as soon as possible if the school was to close and every effort would be taken to the protect the education of those on examination courses.
